Rob Elliott - Piano Teacher, and Adjudicator - Piano Lessons for everyone!
My name is Rob Elliott and I provide Piano and Theory Lessons  in the  Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon area. I have been playing the piano for over 40 years - which I enjoy immensely!

I believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and experience the joy that it brings  - not just for yourself, but for everyone else around you, too!

My students range from 7 years old, right up to much older adults - including those who have some experience of music and those who have just started to learn as a new skill (3 of my pupils are in their 60's and are all learning piano for the first time. It's never too late to learn and have this wonderful experience!).

Lessons are fun, informal, constructive and progressive.

ABRSM examinations can be undertaken, or you can learn just for pleasure.  My aim will be to give you the best instruction in the most informative way possible.

Theoretical terms are taught alongside piano lessons, to ensure that you are fully equipped.

At our first meeting, I will discuss your needs and requirements, and devise a  programme which will work for you or your child.

I teach from a music study in my own home, on an excellent Yamaha YUS professional upright Piano.

My own 3 daughters have enjoyed learning to play the piano on this instrument, too!

I also have a new top-of-the-range Roland Electronic Piano, which we sometimes play on for fun, to explore other sounds whilst being 'creative', and for duets!

I have been a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, The Association of British Choral Directors, have an enhanced CRB Certificate, am fully insured, and keep myself updated with the latest teaching techniques on courses and through further study.

I hold a Diploma and Teaching Certificates from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and the London College of Music, and I am the only Piano Teacher in Wootton Bassett with these qualifications.

Agreements for teaching are drawn up to give you peace of mind.

References from pupils, or parents of pupils can be provided, if required.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me either via phone or email.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Rob.

Below are some helpful notes for you....

Our first meeting/Lesson will consist of:

  • Getting to know you/ the pupil (have you played any instrument before/how long have you been studying music, music interests, other hobbies, and general details which can help me to decide various approaches to get the best out of lessons – and out of the pupil!!
  • Finding out If you have done any music study previously and to establish the current level. Again, this will help me to adopt the right approach for the pupil.
  • Start to Play – the best way to start building a rapport between pupil and teacher.
  • Any questions – your/your child's chance to ask any questions not covered here or on my website.

Questions……

Can you teach anybody to play piano..?

Virtually – Yes! If the pupil (and parents or guardians) gives enough focus and time to this, then we can do almost anything.

How long are the lessons..?

Lessons are usually 30 minutes long, as this allows for maximum focus during this time from the pupil. This applies especially for younger pupils, whose attention span and energy are sometimes a little shorter.

Lessons also take place weekly, so as to gain maximum benefit from the learning process.

What do lessons consist of..?

I aim to teach either piano, but with some theoretical and aural elements included at the same time.

This enables the pupil to learn music notation and the genre as a whole, enabling them to draw upon this knowledge and put it to use for any other instrument: both now and in the future. I try to conduct lessons so that the pupil gets good variety and is always looking at something new each week: especially in the early stages, where motivation is key.

I also encourage pupils to improvise and compose their own tunes. This helps with motivation and a deeper understanding of music as an art form.

Lessons take place at my home music study.

How do I know how well I am (or my son /daughter is) doing..?
If requested, I can provide a full written report every summer term to give you a full appraisal of progress and what we will be working on in the following term. However, I do keep in contact by e.mail on a regular basis.

Can I take examinations..?
Yes!

I actively encourage this, as it is a tried and tested method of improving one's skills. It helps to focus one's mind quite sharply, and usually the improved  results are very noticeable.

I also encourage pupils to enter some arts festivals as it gives exposure to performance opportunities, where the pupil learns to cope with lots of emotions – especially how to overcome nerves and to enjoy the experience.

All of this is undertaken in prior discussions with you.

Are you covered by Insurance..?

Yes!

As a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, my home is covered by liability insurance up the value of £10m.  I am also CRB checked, of which you are most welcome to see the certificate of disclosure.

Is there a formal agreement..?

Yes.

A formal, written agreement drawn up by the ISM is there for your peace of mind. You may take a copy of this.

What are the costs, and how often do I pay..?

The costs are £14.50 per 30 minute session at my home study and are paid termly in advance.

You will be provided with an invoice, which is to be paid either by cash or cheque, 14 days from the date of invoice. Split payments can also be made by arrangement.

What if I wish to stop lessons..?

However sad this would be, this can sometimes occur for a variety of reasons.

All you would need to do is to give one month's notice before the end of any given series of lessons.

Please give me a call any time on 01793 853753/ 07939 249021, or mail rob@pianolessonsinwoottonbassett.com
